Scottish art takes the North-East Biscuit

A North-East art gallery and a Scottish craft agency are sewing up their first year as collaborative partners with a new showcase spotlighting the work of makers north of the border.

The partnership between Ouseburn-based art gallery, The Biscuit Factory and Craft Scotland launched at the end of 2015 and has provided North-East audiences with the chance to discover emerging talent.

The latest line-up includes design duo Yellow Broom with their utilitarian handcrafted lighting; Chris Viviani with his ceramic and wooden kitchenware; ceramicist Jode Pankhurst who creates porcelain bottles, vases and pots and Mairita Jonikane with her washable paper baskets.

Two jewellers will also feature, including Cristina Zani, whose work combines natural and painted wood with precious and non-precious metals; and Cecilia Stamp, who explores a range of resin and enamel-based textures. The designer-makers were handpicked by The Biscuit Factory’s jewellery and textiles curator, Lauren Baker, who sat on the review panel for the Craft Scotland Summer Show, held every August during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. “There are definitely makers involved with Craft Scotland that I hope will exhibit with the gallery in the future, but the six I selected not only stood out because of their quality of craftsmanship and design – they were wonderfully unique too,” she says.

The new Craft Scotland showcase at The Biscuit Factory runs from Friday, October 7 to January 9.
