AN early summer blitz against drink-drivers has shown that the message is still not getting through to some motorists.

In the space of just 30 days a total of 111 people have been arrested in North Yorkshire for taking to the wheel while under the influence of alcohol.

Of those 40 percent were at least twice over the legal limit and 12 per cent were three times over the limit – that latter figure doubling since last year.

And more than 14 per cent of those arrested were found to be under the influence of drugs - with 10 people providing positive samples on new drug testing devices.

In total between June 1 and 30 police carried out more than 850 breath tests across the county and 70 people have already been charged to appear in court.

Sgt Andy Morton said: “Whilst we are pleased we have taken these dangerous drink and drug drivers off the road, it’s very disappointing that people still continue to ignore the warnings and drink or take drugs and get behind the wheel.

“Not only are they a danger to themselves, they put everyone else on the road at risk.”

He said drink-driving and drug-driving would continue to be a priority for the force, despite the blitz coming to an end.

“We are out on the roads looking for people breaking the law. No matter what time of year it is, if you choose to drive under the influence of drink or drugs, we are out there and we will catch you.

“You will face a court appearance, a hefty fine, a driving ban and the possibility of a prison sentence.”

Sgt Morton also thanked members of the public who had tipped them off about suspected drink-drivers.

“Two drivers of heavy goods vehicles, one a tanker and one carrying steel, were amongst those stopped as a direct result of information from the public.”

Anyone with information about possible drink drivers should contact 101, select option one, and pass details to the control room.
