A NEW local radio station is set to brighten up the airwaves when it starts broadcasting for the first time from midday Monday (August 31).

And to celebrate the occasion Guisborough's X Factor singer/songwriter, Abi Alton, performed at the celebratory launch of Zetland FM in the Redcar Beacon.

The community station, founded by Jeremy Gartland, is looking to fill a gap in the market for a local radio station that has the interests of the Redcar and Cleveland community at its heart.

Jeremy Gartland, chairman of Zetland FM, said: “We are delighted to be basing our studios at the Redcar Beacon, which puts us right at the heart of the community we’re serving. Being born in Redcar and growing up in Skelton, I’ve always believed that this area deserves to have its very own radio station – and now we have!

“Our launch event was a real testament to the support that the local community in Redcar and Cleveland has shown and we loved the music and support from Abi Alton.

“The whole team is passionately working hard to put together a radio station that this area can be proud of and these are exciting times for Zetland FM.”

As well as featuring songs from the last five decades, specialist shows, local news, travel updates, sport and interviews, Zetland FM will also be giving opportunities for Redcar and Cleveland residents to learn new skills, as volunteers are welcome to provide broadcast content, with expert training from a team of broadcasting professionals.
