COUNCILLORS are to vote on plans to demolish a former medical clinic and replace it with housing.

An application for planning permission to build six townhouses on the site of the two-storey Oaklea School Clinic in Salters Lane, Wingate, has been lodged with Durham County Council.

Although most of the proposed development would be on the site of the clinic, it would also include a portion of public open land next to the site.

The applicants are seeking permission to build five three-bedroom houses and one four-bedroomed house on the site, each of which would be two-and-a-half storeys tall.

However, residents of Burdon Crescent, Fourways Court, Salters Lane and Granby Terrace have written a letter of objection to the scheme, highlighting a lack of parking and green space issues.

The applicants say they have been working on the proposals for two years and have amended their initial plans to address residents’ concerns.

Wingate Parish Council initially objected to the plan, but has since withdrawn its objection after seeing the detail of the proposal.

Planning officers are recommending that the application be approved subject to a string of detailed conditions.

Members of Durham County Council’s area planning committee will vote on the application when they meet at County Hall, in Durham on Tuesday (Feb 9).
