AN elderly woman was hit by a farmer’s truck as she crossed Victoria Road in Darlington this morning.

The woman was “clipped” by the truck when she walked on to the road without waiting for the pedestrian crossing signal.

The truck was towing a trailer with sheep on it.

A spokeswoman for the Darlington Police inspector’s office said: “Basically she’s walked out onto the road and she’s gone against the traffic lights.

“She’s been clipped and has now been taken to hospital to be checked over.

“It looks like it was one of the farmers from the market.”

An employee at Bathstore on Grange Road said he was changing the window display when he saw the woman slumped against a wall at the intersection of Grange Road and Victoria Road.

He said: “All I saw was her propped against the wall and a lot of people crowded around her.

“It was an old lady. How she got there, I don’t know.”

Police and paramedics were called to the scene.

The woman is not believed to be seriously injured.
