POEMS and artwork created by Darlington schoolchildren are to go on display at Durham Cathedral later this month.

Primary school pupils from across the borough contributed poems on the theme of the futility of war, whilst secondary school students wrote about peace and reconciliation.

The project coincided with Cllr Gerald Lee’s time as Darlington Mayor last year and was organised to help commemorate the centenary of the First World War.

The poetry exhibition was first displayed in Darlington library after which the town’s church leaders chose one or more or the poems to use in their sermons on Remembrance Sunday.

A booklet titled 'Lest We Forget' was also printed in order for the youngster’s work to be remembered for posterity.

Cllr Lee said: “Futility of war and peace and reconciliation are extremely difficult concepts to grapple with but everything that has been produced shows a degree of maturity, empathy and understanding well above the ages of the young people who were tasked to interpret words into an art form.”

The exhibition will be displayed in Durham Cathedral from February 19 to February 28; admission is free and the booklets will be on sale in the cathedral shop.
