A man has been charged with a string of crimes which took place over the bank holiday weekend.

The incidents included the theft of a Nissan Qashqai from a house in Newcastle on Saturday (April 29) afternoon which was later found abandoned in Albert Street, Durham.

Later that evening police received reports of someone attempting to steal a car parked on a driveway in Fieldhouse Lane, Durham.

Officers attended the scene and arrested 25-year-old Leon Ferry a short distance away.

He was charged with a serious of offences including robbery, aggravated vehicle taking, attempted theft of a motor vehicle, criminal damage, threats to cause criminal damage, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

Ferry, of Durham Road, Ushaw Moor, appeared before Peterlee Magistrates Court on Bank Holiday Monday (May 1) where he pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and driving with no insurance.

He entered no pleas to the other offences.

He was remanded in custody and will appear before Durham Crown Court on May 31.
