Three people arrested after a disturbance in which supermarket staff were allegedly assaulted have been released on police bail, it has been confirmed. 

A man was taken to hospital following the incident at Morrisons, on Durham Road, Birtley, near Chester-le-Street, shortly before 7.15pm on Monday (March 4).

In a statement at the time, Northumbria Police said: "“Emergency services attended the scene where it was reported that three people had been involved in a verbal disagreement with members of staff.

“Following this, it was reported that violence broke out and some members of staff were assaulted.

“They were checked over at the scene by paramedics, and one man was taken to hospital for treatment."

A spokesperson for the force said today (Thursday): “A 14-year-old male, a 24-year-old woman, and a 27-year-old man were arrested in connection with the report. They have since been released on police bail pending further enquiries."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said at the time: "We received a call at 7.19pm yesterday evening to reports of a person injured at an address on Durham Road in Birtley.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew, a clinical team leader, and three crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART). One patient was taken to hospital for further treatment."

The police spokesperson added: “Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with further information is asked to contact police using the ‘Report’ page on our website or by calling 101 quoting log NP-20240304-0946.”
