A stranded porpoise was rescued after rapid responses from a quick-thinking member of the public and volunteer medics.
British Divers Marine Life Rescue were alerted to the female porpoise’s situation on the Seaham coastline when the report came in this morning (April 5).
Volunteer medics, consisting of old and new SeaScapes staff, helped re-float the cetacean which had found itself marooned on the shoreline.
A SeaScapes spokesperson said they hoped the animal could remain safe along the coastline following the successful rescue effort.
They said: “This morning a quick-thinking member of public alerted BDMLR to a stranded Harbour Porpoise at Seaham.
“BDMLR medics were quick to arrive on scene to assess the situation. The volunteer medics included a mixture of old and new SeaScapes staff who knew the area well.

“As you will see from the photos the team managed to re-float the Harbour Porpoise after carrying out the necessary assessments and we all hope that she manages to stay safe and can continue swimming and feeding along our coastline.
“It is moments like this that remind us why we all need to work together to protect our coastline and amazing wildlife.
“If you do come across a stranded porpoise or dolphin please do not attempt to put it back in the water, give it some space, keep people and dogs away, and then contact BDMLR (Tel. 01825 765546). Thank you.”
