A takeaway in the heart of Darlington has gone up for sale for £14,950 only months after it was slapped with a zero-star hygiene rating.

Thai Lemon, located on Northgate, in the centre of Darlington, closed down shortly after it was given a zero star hygiene rating.

Now, the business is up for sale with Ernest Wilson Business Agents, advertised as a "prime high street trading position in this bustling County Durham market town".

A rat infestation, uncovered by Darlington Borough Council’s environmental health team when they carried out a routine food hygiene visit shut Thai Lemon in December.

The premises were closed down at the time of the visit as it posed an immediate risk to public health.

But property agents believe the sale of the business could provide a profitable business opportunity for new owners, who have more time to spend at the takeaway.

The listing reads: "An excellent opportunity to acquire this closed hot food takeaway with small dine-in area.

"Occupying a prime high street trading position in this bustling County Durham market town.

"The business was set up by our client in early 2023 but has been brought to market due to their other businesses in Durham requiring more attention.

"This site is crying out for an owner-operator to take the reins here.

"The business traded in limited hours over three days due to our client's other business interests.

"The premises are held on lease with very low rent for such a busy position and comprise double fronted unit with customer seating for ten to twelve, counter leading to well equipped commercial kitchen with a good extraction system.

"Additional preparation room to the rear, large store room currently under-utilised and ideal for further expansion of the dine-in area. Store room and WC."
