A large quantity of groceries were seized after police searched a vehicle reported to be involved in a shoplifting incident.

Durham Police confirmed they stopped an Audi in Barnard Castle town centre before finding meat, cleaning products, cooking oil and frozen food.

All four occupants of the vehicle were arrested at the scene and taken into custody.

They have been interviewed and have now been released on bail ‘with strict conditions’ while enquiries continue.

A Durham Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 4pm on Saturday afternoon (April 20), officers from Barnard Castle neighbourhood team stopped an Audi in the town centre following reports it was suspected to be involved in a shoplifting incident.

“Lo and behold, following a search of the vehicle and some checks over the radio to our control room, officers located a large quantity of groceries inside including meat, cleaning products, cooking oil and frozen food.

“The items were seized and all three passengers and the driver were arrested at the scene and taken into custody.
