Labour leader Keir Starmer says it is “disappointing” that Gateshead have been barred from a playoff campaign this season amid tenancy issues at Gateshead International Stadium.

Gateshead FC were not guaranteed a 10-year tenure at GIS by Gateshead council, a condition that the English Football League requires to gain membership. It means that despite finishing in a playoff position, the club are not allowed to get promoted and therefore have been barred from the playoffs.

It prompted outcry from 'Heed' fans and the wider footballing community, with fans gathering outside the stadium on Tuesday - the day Gateshead should have been playing Solihull in the playoffs.

Speaking to The Northern Echo, Mr Starmer urged those involved to find a way forward to allow the National League club to compete in the playoffs.

“This is incredibly disappointing news. It's clear that after years of Conservative chaos, local authorities across the country are struggling,” Mr Starmer said.
