One person has been arrested after a suspected arson attack destroyed a caravan and cars last night.

The man, 33, was arrested on suspicion of arson and remains in custody after a number of vehicles were found on fire last night (April 25).

Emergency services attended the scene at Low Well Gardens in Heworth, Gateshead, following reports of a fire.

Once in attendance, they found a caravan on fire and discovered it has spread to a number of other vehicles as well as a property.

No one is believed to have been injured.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At about 9.20pm yesterday (Thursday) we were alerted by the fire service to a fire in the Low Well Gardens area of Heworth.

“Emergency services attended and found a caravan was on fire, with the blaze having also spread to a number of other vehicles and a neighbouring property. Thankfully nobody was injured.

“An investigation was immediately launched into the incident. A 33-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of arson and remains in police custody at this time.

“Police believe all parties involved to be known to each other and there is no wider threat to the public.
