BLAYDON spoilt their fightback at Richmond by conceding a soft penalty, which cost them the National One game in a 29-28 defeat.

Trailing 26-7 after 50 minutes, they had the gap down to five when the penalty was kicked and had to be content with two bonus points after being awarded their second penalty try in the 80th minute.

Both those tries resulted from collapsed scrums and the other two came from line-outs, touched down by back row men Harry Bate and Gavin Jones.

Two of the tries they conceded came from interceptions, including one on his own 22 by former Blaydon player James Kyle, now a barrister in London.

Andrew Baggett converted all of Blaydon's tires, but the 70th-minute penalty kicked by home full back Thomas Platt proved the decider.

Corbridge is no longer a fortress for Tynedale, who conceded 50 points at home for the second time this month when they lost 57-21 to Coventry.

Tynedale were in the game at 17-14 following converted tries by flanker Joe Mills and top scorer Ben Frankland, only for both to receive yellow cards in quick succession.

Coventry added a fourth try to lead 24-24 at the break and went on to score nine in total with prop Andy Brown completing a hat-trick.

Tynedale's third try was a brilliant effort by flanker Dan Temm, Gavin Beasley adding the conversions.

Struggling Westoe were also the victims of a nine-try rout as a 61-14 defeat left them next to the bottom in National Three North, eight points adrift of safety.

Billingham look like having to settle for mid-table after slipping below hosts Cleckheaton in a 24-18 defeat. Tries were scored by scrum half Dan Finney and full back Peter Evans, who added a conversion and two penalties.

West Hartlepool are also stuck in mid-table in North One East after a 72nd-minute penalty consigned them to a 16-15 home defeat by Wheatley Hills.

The visiting forwards dominated the first half hour, allowing their 17-year-old fly half to kick two penalties before finishing a good move for the game's only try. He converted for a 13-0 lead before West began to get on top, forcing the Doncaster club to concede a string of penalties.

Zac Southern kicked five to put West ahead but paid the penalty for not rolling away in the tackle 30 metres out.

Middlesbrough remain third in Yorkshire One after a 26-0 home win against a Wath side who dominated possession but had no penetration.

Late withdrawals meant Boro had to draft in veteran Simon Moore and Myles Colvin, who was on his way to play for the seconds at Novos. But they benefited from the return of lock Euan Tremlett, who won good line-out ball and played his part in disrupting Wath's mauls.

Skipper Rob Bellerby also had a fine game, making a break and supplying a neat reverse pass for Jack Bircham to score the first try.

The captain scored after both he and Aeden Moloney beat their markers on the outside before the winger passed back inside.

Good defence under pressure kept the 14-0 lead intact until Boro broke out after 60 minutes with an excellent move which saw Adam Nolson stopped just short. Minutes later he did get over following a good pass from Connor Foley and the fourth try was finished by Tremlett side-stepping the last defender following a good move from a line-out.

Stockton took their points tally in Durham and Northumberland One to 39, one fewer than their total in the whole of last season, when they won 40-26 at home to Ryton.

All six tries were scored by forwards, the first three coming from props Andy Bailes (2) and Tom Nelson, who now has three in three games.

No 8 Joe Green twice charged over from the back of scrums and flanker Lewis Grey completed a good handling movement. Danny Phinn continued his good kicking form, including a 40-metre penalty and a touchline conversion in his tally.

Guisborough burst Consett's bubble with a 39-15 away win to move above their hosts into second place, while Hartlepool Rovers increased Darlington's woes with a 32-10 away win.

Without experienced duo Richard Snowball and Dan Miller, Darlington were unable to build on a 10-0 lead gained through full back Jack Harrild kicking a penalty and converting a try by centre David Kilpatrick.

A Daz Fawcett penalty began Rovers' surge then Adam Smith finished a good move before winger David Grand ran back a failed touch kick to set up a try for Steven Barnfield.

That made it 10-13 at half-time and after following up a grubber kick by Jack Gunn to score Grand grabbed a second from an interception.

Replacement James Evens converted that one and was again on target after racing over himself.
