IT wasn't as happy a day at the European Indoor Championships in Prague for County Durham's Kate Avery who narrowly missed out on a spot in the 3000m final after coming fifth in her heat with a time of 9:05.14.

And she admits it will take some time to overcome the disappointment of not being able to lineup for Saturday's decider.

“I'm absolutely devastated, I've been ill coming into it and I tried to block it out the best that I could,” Avery, of Shildon, said.

“But I went out there and I didn't think about it but I just felt so flat and lethergic so I don't know if being ill had anything to do with it.

“When they went I just didn't have anything in me to react so I'm gutted about that.

“It's always fantastic to put on your country's vest but when you perform like that it kind of takes away from the whole experience so that's disappointing.”
