DARLINGTON are encouraging their supporters to turn out for Spennymoor Town in their play-off semi-final on Tuesday night.

Moors take on Burscough at the Brewery Field, where Quakers recently played two matches due to Heritage Park being waterlogged during their run to the Northern Premier League title.

The first game a fortnight ago was switched with only six hours’ notice, a win over Skelmersdale United, with the second being last Sunday when Darlington defeated Stamford at Moors’ home.

The gesture was hugely appreciated by Quakers and their supporters, especially as Spennymoor owner Brad Groves did not charge a fee, and now Martin Gray is urging his own clubs’ fans to show support for Jason Ainsley’s team.

Gray says he will be at the Brewery Field tomorrow, and he said: “It would be great for as many of our fans as possible to turn up as a gesture of thanks and support Spennymoor. We would love them to win promotion.

“I’d like to thank Spennymoor because without their help I don’t think we would’ve won the championship.

“Had we had to play virtually every night last week at Heritage Park it would’ve been virtually impossible.

“They allowed us to play those two games at their place and that’s helped us win the championship.”

Should Spennymoor beat Burscough, they would host the final on Saturday against either Northwich Victoria or Glossop North End.

Ainsley’s team are hoping to go one better tomorrow having suffered play-off heartache 12 months ago against Quakers.

David Dowson, who has since joined Spennymoor, scored a late winning goal in a dramatic 3-2 victory for Darlington, who went on to clinch promotion by beating Bamber Bridge in the final.

Gray’s men have followed up last year’s success with a second successive promotion, winning the NPL with 104 points, five ahead of runners-up Blyth Spartans.

Blyth play Workington on Tuesday in their NPL play-off semi-final, while third-placed Salford City host Ashton United.
