CHEIKH M’BENGUE claims Sunderland and Newcastle United have offered him a move to the North-East this summer.

M’Bengue, who has been linked with both clubs on a number of occasions in the past, is a free agent after rejecting the offer of a new deal at French Ligue 1 side Rennes.

The 28-year-old left-back has been in discussions with a number of clubs, and is expected to decide on his future in the next fortnight.

Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce is looking to sign an experienced left-back to provide competition to established first-choice Patrick van Aanholt, who recently signed a new long-term deal at the Stadium of Light.

Newcastle were short of left-back options throughout last season, and while Paul Dummett returned from injury to fill the role in the final five games of the season, the Wales international is regarded by many as a more natural centre-half.

M’Bengue could feel he has more chance of holding down a starting spot if he joins Newcastle, although Sunderland can of course offer Premier League football, something that will inevitably influence the Senegal international’s decision.

“It is true that I have a little attraction to the English league and the German championship,” said M’Bengue. “But there is also the reality of the market, supply and demand. I am not (only) focused on these championships.

“If I have something that fits me where the offer is interesting, why not? I am open to many things. Many clubs have approached me – St Etienne asked me, and there is also Sunderland, clubs in Turkey, Newcastle. I will leave it a little time, but not too long.”

Newcastle have been linked with Bournemouth winger Matt Ritchie, although with West Ham and Southampton also interested, their chances of landing the £10m-rated Scotland international would appear to be slight.

They have a much better chance of signing Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle, and have held discussions with Selhurst Park officials about the 26-year-old, who came close to completing a £9m move to Bristol City in January.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have confirmed a pre-season friendly at Belgian side Sporting Lokeren on Saturday, July 23 (4.30pm). Lokeren, who lost to Newcastle in the Intertoto Cup in 2001, finished 11th in Belgium’s Jupiler League last season.
